One of the founding principles of Freemasonry is Relief. One of the forms in which this is expressed is by way of charity. In the UK, Freemasonry is one of the biggest single donors to charity, but charity per se is not an aim of Freemasonry. Each Province has its own charities, typically providing a fund that can be used to help those in distress. In addition, each Lodge raises funds, and these can be applied for charitable purposes. The Worshipful Master for a particular year will choose a charity that has some special meaning, and monies will be raised for the "Master's Fund" which will be given to that charity. Similarly, monies raised at a Ladies' Night will typically go to a charity nominated by the President of the evening (normally the Master's partner). There are several charities that are supported at a national level by Freemasons and others. The following pages give a little further background information on these, including contact details and an outline of their aims. |
