As Master, I get to say a few words about Freemasonry in general and this Lodge in particular. Our members are drawn from all walks of life - some are retired, some professionals and company directors, others are car mechanics and carpet fitters - social status matters not; what we have in common is that we are Freemasons, and this means we try to adhere to a strong set of common moral and ethical values, to improve ourselves so that we become better people and can thus better serve our family, friends and the wider community. This Lodge has strong bonds with other Lodges in the UK, particularly in Scotland, and many of our members are Scottish. There are times when one wonders whether we should really be known as the Hundred of Aberdeen... It is possible for Freemasons to travel worldwide, and find a circle of likeminded friends who welcome other Masons into their midst, and ensure a hearty welcome into their society. Many returning brethren, including our Secretary and Past Master, Colin Couston (email taildragger@talktalk.net), an expatriate who has been based in many countries as part of his job, can vouch for this. Others “retiring to the sun” or visiting from “overseas” receive a warm Masonic welcome almost everywhere they go. Our Province of Buckinghamshire is currently raising funds for our 2010 Festival, which is in support of the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys, and we are enthusiastically supporting this excellent cause. 2010 also sees the Lodge's 75th anniversary, and we have a special meeting arranged for September to commemorate this; a re-enactment of an Initiation from c. 1760 will form the centrepiece of that meeting. If you would like to know more about our Lodge, either because you are already a Mason and would like to visit us, or are interested in joining our wonderful fraternity, please get in touch by emailing our web warden. |
